Most recently our staff read Dr. Lisa Damour’s Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood. The New York Times best seller gives a peak into the brains of teenage girls and sheds new light on this transitional time that often leaves parents bewildered.
Damour, has been working with teenage girls for the length of her extensive career and captures these transitions well. Such transitions include parting with childhood, joining a tribe, and harnessing emotions; among others. Not only does she offer a hopeful and helpful explanation of what may be going on with your teenage girl, she also answers some of the tough questions including:
- Should I monitor my child’s phone use?
- When should I worry about my child’s erratic behavior?
- What is the line between healthy eating and an eating disorder?
It’s arguable that never before has an author captured these transitions of adolescence so poignantly and accurately. Some of our therapists have already recommended this book to parents and the feedback we are hearing is that the book has been truly supportive and transformative. We would highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book if you are parenting a young daughter.
Below we have included one of Dr. Damour’s TED talks. She captures just a few of the points she makes in the book and it is a good preview of her work. Please consider contacting Therapeutic Partners for support if you are struggling with understanding how to help your teen or if he/she is interested in adolescent therapy and counseling.[/cs_text][x_button size=”global” block=”false” circle=”false” icon_only=”false” href=”/contact?appt=Yes” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” style=”margin-bottom:40px;”]Schedule an Appointment[/x_button][x_video_embed no_container=”false” type=”16:9″][/x_video_embed][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][/cs_content]
