Teresa Tomas

I earned by bachelor’s degree in psychology at East Carolina University, where I began to feel compelled to pursue therapeutic counseling through the multisystem perspective of social work. After I graduated, I made the decision to take a gap year to gain work experience in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA Therapy). In 2024, I began work on my master’s degree in social work from North Carolina State University, where my passion to serve individuals facing depression and anxiety only grew. I received extensive clinical training through the HRSA BHWET Scholarship, which inspired my interest in somatic psychotherapy.

First and foremost, my practice follows the principle of unconditional positive regard; that no matter what concerns and challenges you bring to the table, I will remain committed as a practitioner to advocating for your best interests and staying on your team. By utilizing a systems perspective, I ensure that you will feel listened to and understood in all areas of your experience, and that you will arrive at each session with the confidence that we are collaborating towards the best version of your life.

Populations Served: Adolescents (14+) and adults

Areas of Interest/Specialization: I have experience with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship tension, life transitions, and mood disorders. I have a special interest in working with women, particularly women who are LGBTQ+, women experiencing relationship difficulties or career roadblocks, and women with trauma history. I highly prioritize building a space of safety for queer individuals, women, and people of color, both in my practice and in my personal life.

Therapeutic Approaches: My approach to therapy is a combination of positive psychology and psychosomatic work. I love the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach to parts work and I incorporate many elements of Transactional Analysis Therapy into my work. Each individual client has different needs; in our first few sessions we will build a collaborative treatment plan using elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic experiencing.
